Who is mafgirl?

‘Who am I? That’s a secret I’ll never tell… you know you love me – xoxo  mafgirl’

Well but off course, mafgirl is me! mafgirl has been my nickname for years and it all started in the olden days when email was still quite new.

me + nutter = mafgirl

me + nutter = mafgirl

I was lucky enough to have a family of ‘tech-heads’, with my dad working as technical support in a hospital – fixing anything from electric hospital beds, to TV’s to computers- and my brother always playing computer games, to later on in life getting his bachelor in IT and masters in ‘Artificial Intelligence’. I am not as clever as they are by far, but did get their infectious enthusiasm for internet and computers from a very early age.

In those early days of internet I tried to get myself an email account and, as you do, I tried my first name: gone, my first and last name: gone, my last name: gone.. I got suitably frustrated and just typed in all sorts of things, when suddenly a message popped up which said: ‘Congratulations! mafgirl is your new email address’.
So there you have it, mafgirl was born.
Now why mafgirl you ask? Well, I am Dutch and ‘maf’ means ‘nutter’. As I had been told time and time again that I was a nutter (apparently in the positive sense of the word..hmmmm) it only seemed natural.
It is just a tad unfortunate, as I found out when I moved to England at a later stage in my life, that ‘maf’ seemed awfully similar to a very rude English word.
BUT as I refuse to change the name that has been ‘me’ for the last few decades, I am afraid you are stuck with it and if you come to like my website and maybe even showing your friends, you are just going to have to explain the above story :-)

Now, more about me! As you can see this blog is mainly travel photos as I like to travel and as of late have developed a passion for photography. It first started when I moved to England and was away from home, there after I was away traveling for months, even years at a time, I started a website for my friends and family back home to keep them updated. But as I was traveling more and longer, it kind of became a website for fellow travelers I had met on the way and even their friends who were planning to go to the same places I had been. As I tend to be quite extensive with information of where I have been and add links of places I liked, it has now developed into a bit of an information hub, with hopefully, some interesting stories to read too :-)

I still travel a lot as I have been lucky enough to have found a job flying around the world. This does however keep me very busy, so posts are sometimes added well after they actually happened, but I will do my best to keep it all up to date.

You might also find that some posts require a username and password. These are personal pages limited to close friends and family. If you are one of these, than do not hesitate to ask me personally for these details :-)

Feel free to browse through my website and leave comments – good or constructive – or recommendations wherever you please.

Thanks for looking!
